Red belt can be achieved after 3 months. Orange belt can be achieved after another 6 months. Subsequent gradings are held twice a year, with belt promotions once a year. This means that for yellow, green, blue and brown belts, there are 2 gradings and one belt promotion a year. There are 10 grades to brown belt. With good progress, students can get a brown belt in 5 years. As there is so much to learn, it may take another few years to earn a black belt as students have to demonstrate an understanding of the whole syllabus and put it together under the pressure of a determined opponent. This is the period when the student will revise the whole syllabus and demonstrate all techniques effectively. Whilst previous gradings test a small part of the recent syllabus, the black belt requires an ability to retain and demonstrate the whole syllabus. A black belt in Jiu Jitsu takes time and commitment and is not easily earnt but is a wonderful achievement.
For students who wish to teach, they will have to demonstrate an ability to share their knowledge effectively in order to progress with further degrees.
